A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, when a businessman, Emmanuel Michael Okocha, was fatally shot by a policeman in Aba, Abia State. Okocha, from Abiriba Community in Ohafia local government area, was traveling with his late father’s apprentice when they were stopped at a police checkpoint opposite Abayi Girl’s Secondary School.
After presenting the required documents, the police officer allegedly demanded a tip. When Okocha replied that he had nothing to give, the officer shot him without provocation, according to an eyewitness. The police team fled the scene, leaving Okocha to his fate.
The eyewitness rushed Okocha to the nearby Living Word Hospital, where he underwent surgery but succumbed to his injuries on Friday evening, April 19. The Abiriba Community is now demanding justice and calling on the State Governor, Alex Otti, to intervene and ensure that the rogue officers are held accountable.
Okocha’s death has sparked outrage, with the community emphasizing that the lives of innocent citizens must be protected without compromise. He is survived by his wife and two young children. Friends have taken to social media to mourn his passing, sharing photos of his lifeless body in the hospital. The community is determined to ensure that Okocha “Rests in Justice.”
