ECOWAS Initiates Standby Force Activation to Restore Constitutional Order in Niger Republic
In a decisive move, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has instructed its standby force to take action and reinstate constitutional order in Niger Republic. The announcement was made by Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during an extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, August 10.
ECOWAS has also appealed for support from the African Union (AU), partner countries, and relevant institutions to endorse this critical resolution. Despite multiple attempts to engage in dialogue with the military junta in Niger Republic, the coup leaders have persistently rebuffed these efforts. This defiance comes as they continue to unlawfully detain President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.
A segment of the resolution reads as follows: “The committee of the Chief of Defence Staff has been directed to activate the ECOWAS standby force without delay. The ECOWAS standby force will be deployed to reestablish constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. ECOWAS reiterates its unwavering dedication to achieving the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
