Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have cordoned off the residence of former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, situated on Benghazi Street, Wuse Zone 4 in Abuja.
The motive behind the barricade remains undisclosed; however, it is speculated that the anti-corruption agency is seeking to apprehend the former governor, who has been embroiled in controversies with the EFCC even prior to his departure from office in February this year.
The EFCC personnel have restricted movement in and out of the street leading to the ex-governor’s residence.
Bello was recently named as a co-defendant in the ongoing trial of his nephew, Ali Bello, who serves as the Chief of Staff to Governor Usman Ododo, alongside Dauda Sulaiman and Abdulsalam Hudu. The trial revolves around an alleged N84 billion money laundering case, currently being heard by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
On March 14, the EFCC amended the charges against Ali Bello, Sulaiman, and Hudu to include the former governor as the fourth defendant. The charges encompass 17 counts related to money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N84,062,406,089.88.
