How $300 Million Abacha Loot Compelled the Nigerian Government to Release Sowore from Detention

In another session of the exclusive interview with iSEE Magazine, Omoyele Sowore addressed misconceptions surrounding his citizenship status, clarifying that he is not an American citizen despite residing permanently in the United States. While discussing the role of his alleged American citizenship in his interactions with the Nigerian government, Sowore emphasized that he only possesses legal residency in America, with his children being American citizens.

Regarding the involvement of American officials in his case, Sowore highlighted the significant support he received from Senator Bob Menendez, contrasting it with the lack of action from Nigerian representatives. He revealed that Nigerian lawmakers, such as Hon. Kolade Victor Akinjo, failed to provide assistance when requested to sign for his bail.

Sowore further criticized the handling of his case by Nigerian authorities, citing the reluctance of Senator Bamidele Opeyemi S to disclose the findings of an investigation into his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS). In contrast, Sowore praised Senator Menendez’s proactive approach, noting his instrumental role in pressuring the Nigerian government to secure Sowore’s release.

Highlighting the diplomatic leverage exerted by the United States, Sowore recounted how the threat of withholding the $300 million Abacha loot compelled the Nigerian government to expedite his release. He attributed his eventual freedom to the swift intervention of the U.S. government, orchestrated by Senator Menendez, prompting President Buhari to sign the necessary documents for his release.

Sowore’s revelations shed light on the intricate dynamics between international diplomacy and individual rights, underscoring the pivotal role played by external pressures in safeguarding human liberties.
