Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on June 5, 2024, along with his Council of Ministers. This move comes ahead of the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, which was in session from 2019 to 2024.
The President has accepted the resignation and requested the current government to continue until the new administration takes office.
The 17th Lok Sabha’s term ends on June 16. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), secured a majority in the recent Lok Sabha elections on June 4, 2024. While the BJP won 240 seats, falling short of an absolute majority, the NDA alliance has comfortably crossed the halfway mark of 272 seats required to form the government.
The Congress, part of the opposition INDIA alliance, made gains in the election, winning 99 seats, compared to 52 in 2019. The party made inroads in Rajasthan and Haryana, eating into the BJP’s share.
Both the NDA and INDIA bloc are set to hold crucial meetings with their alliance partners later today to discuss election results and strategize for government formation.
