The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has announced the reappointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term. Her new term will commence on September 1, 2025, following the expiration of her first term on August 31, 2025.
The decision was confirmed in a statement released today, with the WTO General Council extending her tenure for another four years. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed her gratitude, stating:
“I am deeply honoured by the trust and support of the WTO General Council and its 166 Members. It is a privilege to continue serving as Director-General for a second four-year term.”
Reflecting on the organisation’s progress during her leadership, she acknowledged the WTO’s critical role in navigating global challenges such as the pandemic, conflicts, and economic uncertainties.
“In recent years, the WTO has played a vital role in helping Members navigate pressing global challenges… I commend Members for their hard work and determination in achieving progress despite unprecedented levels of uncertainty and rapid economic shifts.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala reaffirmed her commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable global trade system:
“By promoting trade as a driver of economic growth and resilience, the WTO will continue to provide a collaborative platform for Members to address shared global challenges. I am deeply committed to working… to build a more inclusive, equitable, and rules-based multilateral trading system that benefits all.”
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala made history when she assumed office on March 1, 2021, as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. Her reappointment reflects strong support for her vision of enhancing the WTO’s relevance in a rapidly evolving global trade landscape.
As she embarks on her second term, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership is expected to further shape the WTO’s efforts to address global trade challenges and foster sustainable economic growth worldwide.
