Nigerian Artist Kcee Shifts Focus to Cultural Music to Spotlight Igbo Heritage

Renowned Nigerian vocalist Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has unveiled his transition from pop music to cultural tunes, driven by his aspiration to illuminate the rich Igbo heritage on the global stage.

The 44-year-old artist, who has been making significant waves with his culturally infused hit track ‘Ojapiano,’ disclosed that his venture into cultural music was inspired by a desire to showcase the depth of Igbo culture to the world. Kcee’s dedication to his craft and determination to express his cultural roots have been yielding remarkable results.

During a recent interview with Channels TV, Kcee shared his journey, revealing that the concept of exploring cultural music had been germinating in his mind since 2018. Over the past few years, he has honed his skills and refined his artistic approach to bring his vision to life.

Reflecting on this transformation, Kcee shared, “It wasn’t an abrupt decision. It was a gradual process that I had been working towards for about four or five years.”

“Since 2018, I started thinking about how can I take the culture to the world. That was when I started doing cultural music. For those that know my career, I wasn’t doing cultural music before. But I have it in me. So, at some point, I discovered the sweetness of the cultural side. And I decided how can I add the pop I’m doing into the culture and take it global. So, it has been a process, I did a couple of cultural songs, cultural praise then I found myself here.”

Kcee’s shift to cultural music is a testament to his commitment to artistic growth and his aspiration to contribute to the preservation and appreciation of Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage. With ‘Ojapiano’ gaining momentum and capturing the attention of listeners, Kcee’s foray into cultural music is undoubtedly leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.
