Nigerians have flocked to social media to express their reactions following the announcement of an increase in passport fees by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The statement, released on Wednesday night, August 21, 2024, outlined the new charges that will take effect from September 1, 2024.
The NIS announced that the cost for a 32-page Passport booklet with a five-year validity will rise from Thirty-five Thousand Naira (N35,000.00) to Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00). Similarly, the fee for a 64-page Passport booklet with a ten-year validity will increase from Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00) to One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00). However, the statement clarified that these fee changes do not apply to passports issued in the Diaspora.
Following the news, Nigerians quickly took to various social media platforms to share their thoughts on the price hike. The reactions have been a mix of frustration, criticism, and calls for the government to reconsider the decision, as many see the increase as an additional burden on citizens already facing economic challenges.
