Vatican City – The Catholic Church and the world are mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. His death was officially announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell in a solemn statement released by the Vatican.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 a.m. this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” the statement read.
“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized.”
“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis was elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, becoming the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to hold the position. His papacy was marked by a strong emphasis on humility, compassion, social justice, and outreach to the marginalized.
Prior to his passing, Pope Francis had been battling pneumonia and bronchitis. He spent 38 days in the hospital before being discharged on March 23. Despite a period of visible weakness, he continued to fulfill his pastoral duties until his health deteriorated.
As the Church and faithful around the world begin a period of mourning, tributes are pouring in for a pontiff who touched countless lives with his message of love, mercy, and unity.
May his soul rest in peace. Amen.
