Rema’s Triumphant Homecoming: Afrobeats Star Returns to Benin City After Six Years

Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, made a triumphant return to his hometown of Benin City after an absence of six years, marking a poignant milestone in his remarkable journey from local talent to international sensation.

A viral video circulated online on Thursday, March 28, 2024, capturing the emotional homecoming of the Mavin artist. Rema, accompanied by fellow indigenous entertainers including Shallipopi and Davido’s aide, Israel DMW, embarked on the journey back to his roots.

The footage showcased Rema leading the group down the aisle of the plane, warmly engaging with fellow passengers as they made their way to Benin City. Upon arrival at the airport, Rema was greeted by a traditional dance troupe, embodying the vibrant culture and warm hospitality of his hometown.

Rema’s rise to fame began with his breakout single “Dumebi” in 2019, which catapulted him into the spotlight. Prior to this, he had already secured a record deal with Jonzing World, under the mentorship of D’Prince, and later joined Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records.

In 2022, Rema’s single “Calm Down” garnered international acclaim, particularly with its remix featuring Selena Gomez, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominating the US Afrobeats Songs chart for a record-breaking 58 weeks.

Having relocated to Lagos in pursuit of his musical dreams in 2019, Rema’s long-awaited homecoming to Benin City in 2024 symbolizes a meaningful moment of reconnecting with his roots and celebrating his journey from humble beginnings to global recognition.
