Renowned Borno Documentary Photographer, Fati Abubakar, Responds to Colorism Encounter
In a recent incident, Fati Abubakar, the internationally acclaimed documentary photographer from Borno, Nigeria found herself confronted with the ugly face of colorism. A man, described by Abubakar as short and unattractive with a pot belly, made a remark implying that she was only “pretty for a dark skin girl.”
Expressing her disbelief and frustration, Abubakar took to social media to share her experience. She highlighted how such attitudes contribute to the prevalence of skin bleaching among women, as they are constantly bombarded with the message that only lighter skin tones are worthy of admiration and love.
Abubakar’s response sheds light on the pervasive issue of colorism in Nigeria, urging for greater awareness and change within society.
