Seun Kuti Slams Lagos Government Over Lack of Fruit Trees

Nigerian singer and activist Seun Kuti has lambasted the Lagos state government for failing to plant fruit trees in the city, depriving citizens of access to fresh fruit.

In a passionate Instagram livestream on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Kuti expressed his frustration, reminiscing about a time when various fruit trees were abundant in the environment. He accused the government of prioritizing construction projects over the welfare of citizens, cutting down trees and leaving the poor to suffer.

Kuti argued that planting fruit trees would be a cost-effective way to provide a vital source of food for hungry citizens, referencing a 2020 incident where the government faced criticism for attempting to cut down trees in Ikoyi for a construction project.

Despite the Lagos government’s 2022 announcement to plant trees, Kuti’s comments suggest that little progress has been made, leaving citizens without access to fresh fruit. The singer’s outcry has sparked a conversation about the government’s priorities and the importance of environmental sustainability.
