Omoyele Sowore, the prominent Nigerian American journalist, founder of SaharaReporters, and former presidential candidate in Nigeria, recently addressed remarks made by his wife regarding the burning of his Nigerian passport upon his return to the United States. In an exclusive interview with iSEE Magazine, Sowore clarified that his wife’s statement was made in jest and not to be taken literally.
He emphasized that if she had truly intended to burn his passport, she wouldn’t have shown the courage and resilience she did while advocating for his release during his nearly five-year detention in Nigeria.
Expressing his gratitude for his wife’s unwavering support during his ordeal, Sowore commended her for her relentless efforts in advocating for his freedom. Despite preferring to operate behind the scenes, Sowore highlighted his wife’s significant contributions to various causes prior to his detention.
Regarding the Nigerian government’s reaction to his wife’s activism, Sowore stated that they inadvertently invited additional scrutiny upon themselves. He recounted instances where government officials expressed more concern about his wife’s actions than his own situation, even approaching him in custody to request that he urge her to temper her activism.
Reflecting on the period leading up to his arrest, Sowore noted that many were unaware of his marital status. However, he praised his wife for her public presence and advocacy across numerous media platforms, both domestically and internationally, including her advocacy for Abba Jalingo while he was detained.
In a lighthearted remark, Sowore dismissed the notion of his wife burning his passport, stating that he uses a digital passport stored in his mind.
Sir sowore is an idol and a true Nigerian , we love him
