Super Eagles Keep World Cup Dream Alive with 2–1 Win Over Lesotho

The Super Eagles of Nigeria boosted their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes with a determined 2–1 win over Lesotho in their Group C clash on Saturday.

Although the victory lifted spirits, Benin Republic’s 1–0 win over Rwanda in Kigali kept the Cheetahs top of the group with 17 points, while South Africa sit second with 15 points after drawing 0–0 with Zimbabwe. Nigeria are third on 14 points, meaning the final matchday on Tuesday will decide which team secures the group’s sole World Cup ticket.

Captain William Troost-Ekong gave Nigeria the lead from the penalty spot after a Lesotho defender handled the ball inside the box. In the 81st minute, debutant Akor Adams doubled the lead with a calm finish following an assist from substitute Victor Osimhen.

Lesotho pulled one back just two minutes later when Hlompho Kalak pounced on a loose ball after goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali failed to clear properly. The hosts came close to snatching an equalizer late on, but Nigeria held firm to claim all three points.

Coach Eric Chelle fielded an attacking lineup featuring Osimhen and Tolu Arokodare up front, supported by Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon in midfield. Ndidi, Troost-Ekong, Bassey, and Benjamin Fredrick provided defensive stability, while Nwabali stayed between the posts.

After a goalless first half, Nigeria’s second-half substitutions made the difference, showing renewed energy and urgency.

With one game left, the Super Eagles remain in the race for direct World Cup qualification, and fans across the nation are eagerly awaiting the decisive showdown on Tuesday.
