Teenage Daughter of Billionaire Stewart Butterfield Missing, Feared to be in Dangerous San Francisco Neighborhood

The 16-year-old daughter of billionaire Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Slack, has gone missing and is believed to be in one of San Francisco’s most dangerous neighborhoods, Tenderloin. Mint Butterfield was last seen on Sunday night in Bolinas, California, and was reported missing by her mother, Caterina Fake, on Monday.

According to a missing poster, Mint was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, flannel pajama pants, and black boots, and may be carrying a gray suitcase. She is described as 5 feet tall with curly, brown-red hair and pierced eyebrows.
Mint has a history of substance abuse and has been known to frequent the Tenderloin area, which is notorious for violent crimes, homelessness, and drug activity. The San Francisco Standard reports that she is familiar with the area due to her previous problems.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is working with the San Francisco Police Department to locate Mint, and anyone with information is asked to contact them. It is unclear whether she went to Tenderloin voluntarily or if she has been kidnapped.

Stewart Butterfield, Mint’s father, is worth $1.6 billion and co-founded Slack, which was acquired by Salesforce in 2021. Her mother, Caterina Fake, founded Flickr and has served on the boards of several startups.
Mint was living with her mother and attending a private boarding school in the Napa area at the time of her disappearance. The Tenderloin neighborhood is known for its fentanyl crisis, and police are working to determine Mint’s whereabouts and ensure her safety.
